California Gull

California gulls at Yolo County Landfill: pastel on Canson Mi-Teintes I rode out to the Landfill. Again. No prairie falcon, no rock wren, no Eurasian wigeon, no blue-winged teal, no mew gull. But I had a blast. This is a sketch of a flock of mixed gulls (there were herring, Thayer’s and at least a couple of ring-billed, plus a possible glaucous-winged) that was predominantly California gulls.

[PS: I did see two tree swallows, though, that I forgot to report…]

  1. This landscaped bird drawing is a lovely. Must have been a fun change from a close-up sketch? Gulls are really very cool birds; their antics are right up there with the crows’ and the jays’ (various types).

  2. Thanks Teresa. Yes. It was fun. What was weird was that so few of the birds in this patch were anything other than adult, when the landfill as a whole has a good spread!

I forgot my water bottle, my bird book, and the kitchen sink, which people were dumping in large numbers at various points at the landfill. I got some odd stares.

  3. LOL...guess you should have pretended to be dumping something, eh? It’s great that you were gleaning beauty from the place rather than adding to the mess.
