A Couple More Zoo Drawings

Flamingo -- pen and ink A couple more drawings from Sunday’s sketchcrawl—I did try to track down the wood duck at the pond, there, but it knew I was after it and it swam the other way.

Tawny frogmouth -- pen and ink and watercolor wash It was a good opportunity, again, to study birds hard; interesting to see new things about both these species which I drew back in September.

Nuttall's woodpecker -- pen and ink Finally, here’s a female Nuttall’s woodpecker I drew outside my window yesterday. Nine in the morning seems to be maximum activity time around here…

  1. I love the frogmouth sketch – you really capture its character (they always look somewhat cross to have been woken up). Try the UCD arboretum for Wood Duck sketching, there’s usually a few hanging out with the Mallards near Mrak. I bet the inks you used for the frogmouth would bring out the wonderfully subtle shades of the female Wood Duck…

  2. Thanks, Richard. I did actually find the wood ducks at the Arb on Saturday and did quite a few sketches but wasn’t too happy — but when I get my new scope it should all be a lot easier…
