Tomatoes

The tomatoes getting good here. Gazpacho time, cherry tomatoes in salad time, mozarella and basil time.

I’m amazed I like them. My mother tells of the time my father went to England for a week when we were tiny leaving her with no cash; the only thing there was to eat in the house was a box of tomatoes brought over by a neighbor. Breakfast, lunch, dinner. She says there might have been a little cereal, but no milk.

Right now, I can’t get enough of them.

  1. I don’t suppose you could pop round and pick up a few cucumbers from our allotment? I am planning to make some New Green pickle. Going to use a Claudia Rosen recipe.

Getting ready to go to London on Friday. First time since the bombs which were right where we work/travel. Thanks for your thoughts. Paris says London is subdued. Hmmm.

  2. I can’t help but recommend the decidely simple but super-tasty Italian starter, Insalata Tricolore:
Tomatoes, Mozzarella, Avocado, all sliced thin, artfully placed, sprinkled with basil and drizzled with olive oil. Its wonderful!

  3. We’re enjoying tomatoes too! And our guests from overseas are reveling in all the beautiful fresh produce. Today I blanced the tomatoes so as to more easily skin them. These I chopped and sprinkled very lightly with salt and strained in a colandar so all the juices drained out. From there, we minced fresh garlic and some of the basil (our friend from Provence said it’s much more “gros” than the basil she knows) we have growing out front. We mixed these all in with some olive oil and let the flavors meld. Finally, we ladled it all over hot pasta and grated fresh parmesan over the top. Steamed spinach and ginger and chile eggplant on the side finished it up. Oh we love summer food!
