Eyeing The Volcano

Those who want check up on what Mount St. Helens is currently up to should look at the VolcanoCam which is situated on a ridge about five miles from the peak. When I checked it this morning there was a large and ominous cloud tapering away from one side of the summit.

Four hurricanes, a volcano that is becoming feisty, and a magnitude 6.0 earthquake in the past several weeks. Are the gods speaking to the United States, or what?

  1. The US has certainly had the brunt of a lot of gods’ games these last few weeks, but the growing disasters aren’t just in the States. Last week Japan was hit by a typhoon with record breaking rainfall. Mt. Asama, a volcano that last year was declared dormant (and which I had planned on climbing) started puffing smoke two weeks ago. Mt. Fuji is on yellow alert since two years ago for a possible major eruption; all elevated highways and large structures were ordered by the government to go through vigorous tests and to fit new rubber dampeners. September had something like 15 earthquakes throughout Japan, one at magnitude 6 just off the coast three weeks ago. And the whole summer has been one long deluge, with record rainfall and landslides everywhere.

Many Pacific islands are now on the verge of submersion, this summer tourists stopped visiting Tuvalu because of rising sea levels. Biologists in Scotland, particularly the Orkneys and the Shetlands, announced in July the completely cessation of breeding among all seabirds due to the warming of the sea….

WHOA!!! Damn! Speak of the devil! Just as I was writing this an earthquake hit! Just came back from the TV. The area just north of Tokyo was the epicenter and here it registered 5 on the Japanese scale which I think is about 6 on the Richter scale. Heart is still pounding! I don’t like earthquakes one bit… not ONE bit!

    Going back to the TV.
