On Being a Fan
Most of my friends aren’t knitters. Most of my friends aren’t birders (though many are, perhaps the largest single group). Most of my friends aren’t sketchers or artists. Most of my friends aren’t calligraphers. Most of my friends aren’t the slightest bit interested in sports of any kind, especially not baseball.
Yet most of my friends seem to tolerate all these things in me. Thank you. It’s baseball season again, which has me happier than I can describe, and I hope you’ll forgive the effusion for a little while. It will settle into the June doldrums for both the Sox and Giants, into the vague hopes of August, into the dashed dreams of September. But for now, baseball leafs out as it does every spring, full of hope and promise.
Play ball.

Jim and I are planning to see the Padres & Pirates play in San Diego while we’re there for our wedding in August. Neither one of us roots for either team, but it wouldn’t be summer without going to at least one MLB team, and Jim’s family is from Pittsburgh, so they’ll be rooting for the Pirates. I can’t wait. It’s just one of those summer rituals we can’t miss.
Thanks Lorianne! I’m treating Numenius to a birthday trip to San Francisco on Sunday to see the Giants play the Braves. I am hoping a) we get to see Lincecum pitch, finally, and b) we get to see the new Braves phenom, Jason Heyward. Excited and looking foward to garlic fries.
I’m just happy sometimes to have the sounds of baseball coming from my tv even if I’m paying very little attention. The sounds of summer. Dennis and I are going to Fenway for a game the end of May. :-)
