The Marriage Of The Place Bloggers

vows.jpgWhat we did today: rose before dawn, heard curlews in the field (Numenius americanus), drove to a hilltop above Winters, had our hair done by Pica’s sister, watched friends and relatives gather, processed down towards a maypole structure to a fiddler’s hornpipe, professed our vows (see left), got enveloped by rose petals and love, and became husband and wife.

After the potluck brunch, the calamitĂ©. Pica was dancing a merry jig entitled “The Bride’s Favorite” when a loud snap almost stopped the festivities — Pica suspected her Achilles’ tendon was no longer functioning. No tandem exit for the bride and groom today. A trip to the hospital confirmed her suspicions. We await more news following an MRI tomorrow morning.

We are in good spirits and can’t complain about the number of attentive friends, relatives, and complete strangers!

This was a wedding of place. We invoked the watershed and gave the birders present the task of finding a golden eagle, a totem bird for us. They were successful after the accident! Both Pica and Numenius saw the bird.

We will be uploading photos from the wedding to a gallery here. [note, August 20: many more have been added…]

  1. So sorry to hear about your tendo achilles, Pica! We wish you and Numenius every happiness. Does this mean we will see more posts on “Feathers” if you have to spend enforced time off your feet???

  2. What a beautifull wedding Pica and Numenius. We toasted to you both when we were out on the lake among the birds and the call of the cranes. So sorry to hear of your accident Pica, hope you are better soon. Much happiness to you both from Sweden.

  3. You poor darling.

I’m really happy that the golden eagle was found. That’s a great omen. What to make of the achilles tendon? It’s all in the name after all. Could it be a reminder to remember your weaknesses and to honor them as you enter this marriage?

Friends of mine were married last year and some wind knocked down some of the flowers on the altar. Michael Meade said that it’s good when there are mistakes in the wedding, because then they won’t occur in the marriage. So, I guess your tendon is a blessing in that respect.

Oh! It hurts to think about. I send my best to you Pica, and my blessings and happiness to both of you on your wonderful union.

May the sun always shine on you, wherever you are, together.

    Love,Lisa

  5. Felicitations, pals. I wish every happiness for you. Kudos on the eagle.

And Pica, don’t be stoic about that tendon: sit as much as possible, let it take as long as it needs to fix itself. (Speaking as the loving spouse of a very stubborn woman with a sprained ankle… the thing about an Achilles tendon injury is that it really styx with you…

  7. Thank you all so much for your good wishes. I’m still feeling pretty high (and not at all in pain). They’ll be sure to take care of that in surgery tomorrow morning, I think—it’s supposed to be a really long and arduous rehab. Good thing there are so many physical therapists who read this blog. :) I need all the motivation I can get!

  8. Just returned to the East Coast from an event filled weekend with Pica and Numenius. The wedding day was nothing short of surreal…. from the glorious ceremony to the ER visit. May all the good feelings present on their special day be with the joyous couple as they face their first major challenge as man and wife. Indeed, they both were radiant with joy on the mountain top on Sunday morning…as the golden eagle, upon request by the bride, soared over the hills and imparted his spirit on the gathering. This day will long be in my memory. Good tidings, dear Pica and Numenius.
