Blank Books

I’m pretty close to settling on the art supplies to take on our trip to Europe (the main thing left to decide is just what pencils and pens). One thing of course to bring is an artist’s journal, always a challenge. This year I’ve been doing my journal in these great Pentalic drawing books and will be taking one of these along. The paper in these is 90 lb. weight which is thick enough to take a good wash. These Pentalic blank books are hard to find though; the art section of the UC Davis bookstore started carrying them last year but I’ve never seen them in any other art store.

The solution to having the perfect journal is bind one’s own. I’m thinking of taking bookbinding this fall at the San Francisco Center for the Book so I can do just that.

  1. How strict are they on baggage weight allowances over there? I had trouble taking my classification kit over to the UK as it contained a very large manual as well as goniometers which would have been extremely difficult to buy at the last minute on my arrival. Consequently I was just within weight allowance going and 1.5kg over on my return. Will you be restricted in terms of what type of hand luggage you can carry on to the plane?

  2. Numenius, I have to explain that Jenny was quite concerned about what she thought was your intention to take 90 pounds of paper to Europe! We worked out that you were referring to the US equivalent of gsm (grams per square metre). We both had a good laugh about our ignorance of US weights and measures. (We do understand feet and Fahrenheit but hadn’t heard of this one.)

  3. Ha! Jenny, just so you know, I’m planning on getting everything for two weeks into hand luggage, with only a small bag containing forbidden cabin-objects in the hold. Maybe I’m paranoid but I assume they’ll lose my luggage. Having read some of the horror stories of lost bags, even a lost wheelchair, by airlines since the tightened security regulations, I don’t want to take chances. It means planning your packing very carefully….
