Cold Canyon Watercoloring

Cold Canyon watercolor We got a quick trip in before the rain arrived this afternoon. I find I’m a very impatient person and will never manage this fiendishly difficult medium, but it was a good time…

  1. Like you, I am an impatient would-be watercolorist. I have definitely had to learn to “look on the bright side” and learn to love my experiments in this difficult medium.

I like your painting. The colors are lovely and it conveys a mood with the landscape.

The vegetation is a bit tricky (yes, ARGH, I know this well). But with regard to the landform, especially in the left horizon, you really got the lay of the land across. I can see the “geology” of the ridge. Nice!

  2. I love the colors of this … and the lines too. The land is all there, as Betsy said above … but I do know what you mean about being too impatient for this medium. I am like that too, hence my recent preferences for pencil witha touch of white chalk and the odd hint of conte crayons in black and white.

  3. Have you tried the blotting paper method? It’s one technique I learned in Oregon… You paint the portion you want, wait a short bit, then use a roll of toilet paper to blot out the extra water. Often many of the colors work better with a base of Paine’s Grey and the color on top of it. If you allow the Paine’s Grey to dry out at the edges, the edges themselves can work as lines, eliminated the need to use a pen.

  4. Unlike the three previous commenters, I know nothing about watercolor. I like this so much. It makes me feel the blue sky. The red marks and the white spaces give me plenty of room.
